Dash Cams Australia

A dash cam is cheap insurance against the one moment you can’t prove what happened. The IRWAY Australia range runs from a $99 Full HD starter camera to the VisionPro VP19, a true 4K front and rear system with built-in 4G that lets you check your car live from your phone. Every model is chosen for Australian roads, with parking protection, GPS options and local support out of our Chatswood office.

Not sure where to start? Most drivers are best served by a front and rear camera with parking mode. If you want to see your car from anywhere, go 4G connected.

How to choose a dash cam in Australia

Megapixels sell cameras. They don’t win insurance claims on their own. These are the six things that decide whether your footage is actually useful, and how the IRWAY range stacks up on each.

1. Resolution: Full HD, 2K or 4K?

Full HD (1080p) is the floor. 2K QHD sharpens plates and signs. 4K (3840 x 2160) is what you want on the front camera if reading a number plate at distance or at night matters to you. A common, sensible pairing is 4K front with Full HD rear, which is exactly how the VisionPro VP19 is built.

Resolution Clarity IRWAY example Storage use
1080p Full HD Good everyday detail IRWAY V11, MyDean I9, MK300 Lowest
2K QHD Sharper plates and signs MyDean S9QQ (front and rear) Medium
4K Ultra HD Clearest plates at distance and at night VisionPro VP19, VP20 Highest

2. The sensor behind the lens

Resolution without a good sensor is just bigger, blurrier files. The VisionPro VP19 and VP20 run a Sony STARVIS IMX415 8MP sensor with WDR and Super Night Vision. The MyDean MK300 uses a Sony STARVIS IMX307 and the S9QQ a Sony STARVIS IMX335. Check the sensor before you check the price.

3. How many channels?

One channel covers the road ahead. Two channels add the rear, where tailgaters and rear-enders happen. Three channels add the cabin, which is the one rideshare and taxi drivers need. We stock 1-channel (V11), 2-channel (VP19, I9, S9QQ), 3-channel (VP20, MK300) and 4-channel (MyDean Z400W) systems.

4. Parking mode and power

Your car spends most of its life parked, which is when trolley dings and hit-and-runs happen. Parking mode needs constant power, so the camera is hardwired to the fuse box, plugged into an OBD power cable, or run off a MyDean Power Pack CP100. IRWAY hardwire kits cut the camera off at around 11.8 to 12V so your car still starts.

5. Wi-Fi or 4G?

Wi-Fi lets you download clips when you’re standing next to the car. 4G lets you watch the car live, get an impact alert and see its GPS location from anywhere. That’s the difference between finding the dent tomorrow and knowing about it tonight. 4G needs a Nano SIM with data (Telstra, Optus or Vodafone). Without one, the camera still records as a normal dash cam.

6. Heat, storage and warranty

The VisionPro VP19 and VP20 are rated to operate from -20°C to 70°C. A parked car in an Australian summer can get hotter than that at dash level, so use a sunshade and let the camera sit behind it. For storage, use a high-endurance microSD card. The VP19 ships with 64GB, and a 256GB upgrade is $59 at checkout, which we recommend if you run parking mode. VisionPro main units and rear cameras carry a 3-year warranty, and parts and accessories carry 12 months.

Dash cam FAQ

Are dash cams legal in Australia?

Yes. Dash cams are legal in every state and territory as long as they don’t block the driver’s view of the road. Recording audio can require the consent of people being recorded, and the rules vary by state.

What resolution dash cam do I need?

Full HD is the minimum. For the front camera, 4K gives the clearest number-plate detail at distance and in low light. Many drivers run 4K front and Full HD rear to balance storage.

Should I get a front-only or front and rear dash cam?

Front and rear. Rear-end collisions and tailgaters are among the most common claim scenarios, and a front-only camera can’t see them.

Does parking mode need hardwiring?

It needs constant power: a hardwire kit to the fuse box, an OBD power cable, or a battery pack like the MyDean Power Pack CP100. Hardwiring is best done by an installer.

What size SD card do I need?

Use a high-endurance card. The VP19 includes 64GB. Step up to 256GB if you use parking mode or record in 4K front and rear every day.

What is the difference between a Wi-Fi and a 4G dash cam?

Wi-Fi only works when your phone is near the car. 4G gives you live view, instant alerts and GPS tracking from anywhere, using a Nano SIM with a data plan.
