4K Dash Cams Australia
When the other driver says it wasn’t them, detail is what settles it. Our 4K dash cams record at 3840 x 2160, roughly four times the detail of Full HD, so number plates stay readable at distance and after dark. The VisionPro VP19 ($750) pairs a 4K front camera on a Sony STARVIS IMX415 sensor with a Full HD rear, built-in 4G, GPS and 24/7 parking mode. Need the cabin covered too? The VisionPro VP20 ($850) adds a Full HD interior camera.
Is a 4K dash cam worth it?
On the front camera, yes, provided the rest of the camera is built properly. 4K is the difference between guessing at a plate and reading it, especially on a car parked across the street or pulling away from you. But a cheap 4K camera with a poor sensor loses to a good 2K one at night. That’s why we only put 4K on a Sony STARVIS IMX415 with WDR and Super Night Vision.
4K vs 2K vs 1080p
| Resolution | Plate reading | Best for | Storage use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p Full HD | OK up close | Rear and cabin channels, budget builds | Lowest |
| 2K QHD | Good | Mid-range front camera | Medium |
| 4K Ultra HD | Best, including at distance | Front camera (VisionPro VP19, VP20) | Highest |
4K at 30fps or 2K at 60fps?
In normal light, 4K captures more static detail, like the plate on a parked car. A higher frame rate helps freeze fast motion but can’t add detail the sensor never captured. For evidence, prioritise resolution and sensor first. The VisionPro records 4K at 30fps.
4K after dark
Resolution only helps if the sensor can see. The IMX415 with Wide Dynamic Range balances oncoming headlights against dark surroundings, so tunnels, underground car parks and unlit suburban streets still give you usable footage. The front lens covers a 158° field of view.
How much storage does 4K need?
4K files are big, and a dual-channel camera writes two streams at once. The VP19 ships with a 64GB card. If you run parking mode, upgrade to 256GB ($59 at checkout). The VisionPro supports high-endurance cards up to 512GB. Standard phone cards wear out fast under constant rewriting, so use a card rated for dash cams.
4K plus 4G: the full package
Most 4K dash cams stop at recording. The VisionPro also stays online through a built-in Quectel 4G module, so you get live view, impact alerts, GPS tracking plus geofence and overspeed warnings on your phone. 4K tells you what happened. 4G tells you it’s happening.
Built for Australian heat
The VP19 and VP20 are rated to operate from -20°C to 70°C. Dash-level temperatures in a parked car on a 40°C day can go past that, so use a windscreen sunshade and keep the camera behind it. It’s a two-second habit that adds years to any windscreen electronics.
4K dash cam FAQ
What is a 4K dash cam?
A dash cam that records at 3840 x 2160 (2160p), about four times the detail of Full HD. It makes plates, faces and signs far easier to read, especially at distance.
Are 4K dash cams worth it?
For the front camera, yes, as long as the sensor is good. Rear and cabin cameras can run in Full HD to save storage.
How does a 4K dash cam perform at night?
Night performance comes from the sensor and WDR, not just resolution. The VisionPro uses a Sony STARVIS IMX415 with WDR and Super Night Vision.
How much footage can a 4K dash cam store?
It depends on the card and channels. The VP19 includes a 64GB card that loops over the oldest footage when full. Use 256GB if you run parking mode.
Do 4K cameras use more storage and power?
Yes, bigger files and slightly more power draw, which is why a high-endurance card and correct hardwiring matter more on a 4K camera.
